Bats freeze and drop like flies during storm in United States

In Houston, Texas, bats are suffering from hypothermia in one of the city’s largest colonies.

UNITED STATES – In Texas, the cold isn’t sparing local wildlife. As the United States is battered by a violent and freezing winter storm, bats in Houston cannot withstand the temperatures, as you can see in the video at the top of the article.

Nearly 200 bats rescued

Hundreds of bats lie frozen on the ground under the Waugh Bridge, one of the bridges that protects one of the city’s largest colonies. “Poor little ones…” laments Mary Warwick of the Houston Humane Society Wildlife, who collects the small frozen bodies one by one. The Houston Humane Society comes to the rescue of bats that have been suffering from hypothermia shock for the past few days.

Once picked up and placed in a box, the specimens are kept warm and gradually fed back. The director of the Houston Humane Society Wildlife urges the vigilance of walkers who can help save bats found on the ground: “All you have to do is take a box like this or a shoe box and grab some cardboard. Put them in the box. keep them warm Keep them dry,” says Mary Warwick. Almost 200 specimens have already been saved.

A colony that has been in peril in recent years

This is not the first time that this colony has suffered the consequences of climatic events. With 30,000 copies sold a few years ago, it was decimated by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and then by a cold snap in February 2021.

Questioned by ABC, Mary Warwick fears for the colony’s survival. “We could lose them, they could migrate south. I hope we can build a strong community that can take care of them to keep them here longer. »
