German giant Volkswagen will have its battery megafactory in St-Thomas, Ontario, the company announced Monday morning.

“Our North America strategy is a key priority in our 10-point plan that we unveiled last year. With cell production decisions in Canada and a Scout site in South Carolina, we are accelerating the execution of our North America strategy,” said Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume in a statement.
“Today’s announcement from Volkswagen is a true testament to our highly skilled workforce and Canada’s strong and growing battery ecosystem. VW’s decision to set up its first foreign Gigafactory in Canada is a testament to our country’s competitiveness when it comes to attracting large investments,” said German Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne at a press conference in Montreal.
