Bay du Nord: Lawsuit against the federal government

On May 6, the organization Ecojustice filed a lawsuit in federal court against the Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, challenging the government’s decision to authorize the Bay du Nord project, an oil platform off the coast of Terre-Neuve whose Production is planned to 1 billion barrels of oil.

Ecojustice is acting on behalf of Équiterre and the Sierra Club Foundation, two environmental organizations that claim the Bay du Nord project violates Canada’s international obligations.

“This project poses a threat to our marine ecosystems and our goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Considering all of the long-term implications, we have no choice but to submit this application for judicial review in federal court,” said Coleen Thorpe, Executive Director of Équiterre.
