Huw Edwards raked in at least £20,000 on top of his six-figure BBC salary from outside speaking events in the first three months of the year.

Two other BBC journalists, Today show’s Nick Robinson and technology reporter Zoe Kleinman, were also awarded in the highest category, ‘Over £10,000’, for outside work.

Robinson, 59, received the fee to appear as a speaker for the Scottish Energy Forum, a group targeted by climate protesters.

Edwards, who was praised for hosting BBC coverage of the late Queen’s death, was paid more than £10,000 to act as an interviewer for marketing firm Inspired Thinking Group.

He also subsequently cashed in two payments of between £5,000 and £10,000 by acting as host for the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and a day later taking on the same role for JBA Ltd. took over.

A month earlier he was paid between £5,000 and £10,000 as a ‘contributor’ to financial publisher Citywire.

Munchetty, who earned £365,000 from the company last year, took down more than £10,000 from US computer giant Microsoft to serve as a presenter.

She was also paid up to £10,000 for performing the same role at Associated British Foods.

Three other top BBC journalists – Kirsty Wark, John Simpson and Lyse Doucet – received two payments in the £5,000 to £10,000 category during this period.

The External Events Register was launched in 2021 as part of the BBC’s “renewed commitment” to impartiality.

According to the BBC, over the three-month period, 81 per cent of these external events involved payments of £5,000 or less and 56 per cent were payments of less than £1,000.
