The Bears picked Kyler Gordon, a Washington cornerback, with the #39 pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
Gordon has experience playing both outside and inside defense, so he offers versatility to the team while Matt Eberflus works to rebuild the defense. Gordon also has experience playing in zone defenses like Eberflus’ and does a good job of keeping the game ahead in these situations. Tackling is certainly one of Gordon’s strengths, with a knack for stopping ball carriers before they reach the line to win. Last season, Gordon only gave up a 50% completion rate and a 47.3 passer rating, according to the PFF. He also never gave up a touchdown from 2019 to 2021. Gordon was named to the All Pac-12 First Team in 2021.
Some expected Ryan Poles to add a gun on offense to help Justin Fields or add an offensive lineman with his first pick as NFL GM. Instead, he chose to help his head coach by adding a striker to the defense.
The Bears are set to pick No. 48 next, then No. 71 again, but there’s a chance the Poles may decide to trade down from one of those spots to add more draft capital.
