Journalist Beatrice Borromeo discusses the audio of King Juan Carlos of Spain in the documentary The Prince on Netflix today. In an interview with Corriere della Sera, the presenter recalled that Prince Vittorio Emanuele admitted witnessing the accident that killed the king’s 15-year-old brother. “The fact that during his adolescence, that is, during his years of learning everything about the world, Savoy witnessed an accident similar to his own, which resulted in a death that was immediately covered up (that of Juan Carlos’ younger brother , “Alfonso, who was killed by an accidental shot, editor’s note), is the missing piece to really understand Cavallo’s story,” says Borromeo in his conversation with Paola Pollo.
The confession
Borromeo then explains how he arrived at the confession: “Vittorio Emanuele repeated the story of Juan Carlos several times at the end of his interview, to me and then to other members of the crew.” It was he himself who spontaneously linked the two events brought. I think he did it because the two accidents have profound similarities, both in the dynamics of the accidents and the way they were handled afterwards. So I think he wanted to tell us so that we can fully understand the context in which he grew up. It was tricky material, but when Paolo Bernardelli, our executive producer, came up with the idea of queuing the recording, we immediately realized it worked because it gave us the extra interpretation that allowed us to do the three episodes to re-read with a new awareness ». He adds that “only to a casual observer does this report seem separate from the rest”.
Emanuele Filiberto
Emanuele Filiberto, on the other hand, “said that he had no regrets and I don’t think he should have, because a profound and unpublished portrait emerges of him.” I was very pleased that he thought the documentary was balanced, and thanks to his help we were able to open so many more windows on the Prince’s life: his childhood, the years in exile, the love affair with Marina in Iran , and he was a neglected son who managed to break this anaffective dynamic by being became a good father. Which, among other things, makes the fact that Emanuele will still defend him for the rest of his life very human.”
