The “enmity against God” or “fighting God” or charge that led to the hanging of a 23-year-old protester in Iran is both majestic and sinister. It points to something we still don’t understand: the clash of the absolute. In Ukraine there is courage to live against the death drive of a neo-imperial power ideology. And with the usual exceptions, we knew how to choose because we had no alternatives to assist combatants in Europe’s cruelest and most dangerous war since the end of the world war. With Iran, we allow ourselves the luxury of being carefree, we stand with our hearts but keep our hands in our pockets.
