Items included a miniature Batman doll and handwritten cards from fans.

A note on the New York tribute read: “Thank you for being our friend.”

“You are so loved and will be missed for generations.”

In his memoir, Matthew Perry spoke briefly about how he would like to be remembered after his death.

“When I die, I know people will be talking about friends, friends, friends,” he wrote.

“And I’m happy about that, glad that I did a solid job as an actor and gave people the opportunity to make fun of my problems on the World Wide Web several times.”

“But when I die, as far as my so-called achievements go, it would be nice if friends were listed far behind the things I’ve done to help other people.”

“I know it won’t happen, but it would be nice.”

The actor, who rose to fame as the sarcastic Chandler Bing in the groundbreaking ’90s sitcom, was found dead in his Los Angeles home on Saturday after emergency responders were called around 4 p.m. local time.

Earlier in the day, he had reportedly played a two-hour game of pickleball – a sport similar to tennis but played on a smaller court – before sending his assistant off on an errand. When they returned, Perry was reportedly found lifeless in his hot tub.

Friends, which followed the lives of six 20-something friends living in New York, was a huge hit worldwide when it aired between 1994 and 2004, and reruns remain popular years later.

Personally, Perry never married and ended his engagement to Molly Hurwitz, a talent manager, in 2021. He also dated several well-known actresses throughout his life, including Julia Roberts and Lizzy Caplan.

Throughout his life, Perry also spoke openly and publicly about his problems with drugs and alcohol, having first entered rehab for painkiller addiction following a jet ski accident in 1997.

After this first stay, he went to rehab again in 2001 and 2011. In an interview in 2016, he said that he didn’t remember filming three seasons of Friends.

Perry wrote in his memoirs published last year that he spent $9 million trying to get sober, revealing that he attended 6,000 AA meetings, went to rehab 15 times and detoxed 65 times have.

Although Perry hid his demons from the public for years, he detailed his struggles in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing.

He began by writing: “Hello, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name.” My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.’

He added: “People would be surprised to know that I have been sober for the most part since 2001. Apart from about sixty or seventy little mishaps over the years.”
