Since the release of Beckham, stories about the lives of David and Victoria Beckham have dominated the internet.
Topics covered in the four-part docuseries included the rise of the football star’s career, intimate family moments and Posh Spice revealing the toughest time in her 24-year marriage to David.
“I don’t think the guy has ever sat and talked about himself for more than 20 minutes in his life,” director Fisher Stevens admitted to David’s Hollywood Reporter while unpacking the docuseries.

Stevens opened up about a moment in particular that took the internet by storm – when David called out his wife for claiming she grew up “working class” – and shared that the moment was completely unscripted and David wasn’t supposed to be home .

“It was our first interview with Victoria – and to be honest I had no idea David was listening. He should listen [his daughter] “Harper to school,” Stevens told the outlet. “I guess he came back and decided he was going to listen to the interview somehow.”

He continued: “I have a great cameraman and he just knew he had to shoot right in the face as he walked in the back door. I knew it was great. But at the same time, oh my God, I told him he had gone. I say, “Dude, you need to get out of here and let me talk to your wife. Come on.’ But I was really glad we got that.
Steven, a documentary filmmaker and actor, also noted what sold him on the project: when Beckham came up to him and said, “I want to do this.”

“I watched a lot of interviews with him and knew I had to approach it differently, shoot it differently and make him feel comfortable,” Stevens said. “I needed a lot of time with him.”

As for Victoria, Fisher said Posh Spice approached the interview differently. “Victoria is much better with language and conversation and with feelings and emotions,” he explained.
Stevens continued: “David closed most of it, so I knew it would take some time to get it out. I think he’s just gotten to the point in his life where he’s finally ready to relive moments he’s been repressing. Brits, don’t.” To generalize: they are not particularly talkative when it comes to their lives and feelings [Americans] Are.”

Beckham’s production company Studio 99 was also involved in the project. Although David was involved in the documentaries as a protagonist and producer, Stevens had the final decision on what made it into the series and what didn’t.

This was difficult for Beckham.
“I just said, ‘If I do this, we’ll have to talk about your whole life. Everything, the ups and downs.’ “For him, the 2003 Madrid stuff and the tabloids were really hard on him,” Stevens said.

The director noted that he chose to leave out the footage of David talking about the World Cup in Qatar. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Beckham has been widely criticized by the LGBTQ community for his role as an ambassador for the event given the human rights record of the host country.”

Although both David and Victoria spent their lives in the public eye (and not much about them remained unknown), Stevens was still shocked to learn how poorly football fans treated Beckham after the infamous red card incident at the World Cup in 1998.

“I couldn’t believe the abuse they suffered,” Stevens said of David and Victoria. “That’s what David had explained to me when he told me he wanted to do this because I had no idea. I can’t believe the abuse he received everywhere, even in Los Angeles. But he always turns it around.” And to me that’s so admirable. I don’t know, a lot of people aren’t able to do what David did.”

Stevens continued: “The other thing that fascinated me about him was his compulsive behavior about everything. That’s why he does everything 100 percent. He won’t do it if he doesn’t know he can do it. Whether it’s beekeeping or being an incredible cook or he’s obviously obsessed with cleanliness, neatness and order. I really had to convince him to let me film some of it. He didn’t want me to do that.”
