Seeing them so united and in love on Tuesday night at the London premiere of “Beckham,” the new four-episode Netflix series out October 4th, with their four children nearby, an official daughter-in-law (Nicola) (Peltz , wife of firstborn Brooklyn) and another to come soon (the model Mia Regan, girlfriend of second son Romeo), it’s hard to believe that 20 years ago David and Victoria Beckham went through a crisis so deep that it almost caused their entire castle to collapse. It was 2003 and the English champions had just landed in Madrid to play for Real Madrid, while the former Spice Girls had stayed in the UK to avoid disrupting the school life of their two children, Brooklyn and Romeo. A distance that the tabloids attached great importance to and began to speculate about an alleged relationship between Beckham and his personal assistant Rebecca Loos. And suddenly the love story of the good-looking footballer and the successful singer became a nightmare for those directly involved, who one day also became the favorite target of the tabloid press.

A difficult time, which the couple talked about in the fourth chapter of the series. “They were the most difficult months of my life,” Victoria admitted, barely holding back her tears. “I didn’t feel like a couple anymore.” It seemed like the world was against us. The point is this: we were against each other, if I’m being completely honest. Until Madrid it sometimes felt like it was us against everyone else, but we were together, we were connected, we were with each other. But when we were in Spain that didn’t seem to be the case. And that’s sad. I can’t even express how difficult that was. And how it affected me. If I’m honest, it was probably the unhappiest time of my life. To overcome the crisis, the designer decided to move to Spain to live with her husband, but the situation remained difficult, at least initially.

“I honestly don’t know how we got through that,” Beckham repeated. Victoria is everything to me, it was incredibly hard to see her hurt, but we are fighters and in that moment we had to fight for each other, we had to fight for our family. The birth of their third child, Cruz, now 18, helped bring peace back to the Beckham family, but the crisis was only finally overcome in 2007, when the footballer moved to Los Angeles to play for the LA Galaxy to play. “I couldn’t be more proud of you and us. “I love you so much,” Victoria wrote under a post dedicated to her husband David and the Netflix evening. And the fairy tale continues.
