Bed bugs invade Paris: they are almost invisible and feed on human blood. The government intervenes

The risk of spread

Can the bed bug invasion also reach Italy? With Paris having just hosted Fashion Week and the Rugby World Cup, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city, fears are growing that the problem could spread to other countries. In the UK, Eurostar has sought to reassure travelers that its trains’ fabric surfaces are cleaned “thoroughly and regularly”, including with heat, and that the presence of insects such as bed bugs is “extremely rare”. But social media has already raised fears that it may be too late. There has been a spike in Google searches for bed bugs in the UK this week as tensions run high on trains and streets.

How to prevent something

What to do to prevent bed bugs from spreading? Like all insects, they tend to enter the home through places on walls or windows. To keep them out of the apartment, you need to seal these “entrances” with silicone or putty. For old and damaged windows and doors, it is important to repair them by installing seals or draft excluders. Then it is advisable to eliminate moisture both inside and outside the house, as this is one way to prevent parasite infestations. In fact, bed bugs tend to search for water and food, and if the environment in the house is humid, they will be attracted.

Boom in pest control inquiries

Pest experts have received increasing inquiries from concerned Londoners. David Lodge of Beaver Pest Control reported a 17% increase compared to last month (and 10% compared to last year), while Joseph Terrence of Simply the Pest London says he has received inquiries from people traveling to Paris and ask for advice on what to do to protect yourself.

While the risk of bringing home a bed bug in your luggage may be no greater than usual, pest experts say the panic over Paris could help make people more aware of the threat. “It is better to first be aware of the problem and address it,” says Manov.
