Beijing recorded more than 300 hours of below-freezing temperatures in the past two weeks, setting a record for the coldest two-week period in the Chinese capital since authorities began tracking.

The official Beijing Daily newspaper said the two weeks starting Dec. 11 saw the most hours of subfreezing temperatures since 1951, The Associated Press reported.

The city experienced a low of at least 14 degrees Fahrenheit for nine consecutive days.

The National Meteorological Center recorded record low temperatures in December, according to the AP. Average temperatures in other parts of China also reached record lows set in 1961, the AP reported, citing the center.

The Beijing Meteorological Observatory said early Dec. 26 local time that temperatures would rise, reaching a high of 39.2 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday. The low could fall to 17.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Earlier this year, in June, Beijing experienced its highest day on record, with temperatures reaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
