Belgium: A teenager was poisoned with carbon monoxide in a building

An 18-year-old Belgian girl is now hanging between life and death after being poisoned with carbon monoxide on Saturday afternoon.

The spokesman for the firefighters of the municipality of Ganshoren in the Brussels-Capital region of Belgium said that around 4:30 p.m. local time, the emergency services received a call to “an unconscious young girl in a bathroom in an apartment. She had to be resuscitated before being transported to the hospital, where she is in critical condition.

The operator could quickly conclude CO poisoning. The fire brigade and rescue workers were immediately dispatched to the scene.

In addition to the teenager, the victim’s mother and younger brother also required hospitalization, although their condition is less worrying.

The residents of the apartment on the first floor of the building above which the poisoning took place were also taken to the hospital for examination. The other residents of the building could in turn be examined on site.

Sibelga, manager of the natural gas distribution network in the Brussels-Capital region, came on site to shut off the gas supply to the building suspected to be the source of the accident. An investigation will be launched shortly to determine the cause of this incident.
