Belgium: Brussels attack victims euthanized aged 23

Shanti De Corte, one of the survivors of the Brussels airport attacks, was euthanized in May 2022 at the age of 23, a Belgian TV program revealed. Her family says they are shocked by the report about their daughter.

Such is the case of Shanti De Corte, a 23-year-old young woman who was put to sleep because she could no longer endure the mental suffering caused by the attacks in Brussels, reports the website 7sur7.be. She was actually only a few meters away from the two terrorists who blew themselves up on March 22, 2016, although she sustained no physical injuries.

On the day of the tragedy, Shanti was only 17 years old. With the rest of her class, she prepared to embark on a graduation trip to Rome with her classmates. She was standing in the departure hall when the two explosions sounded, killing 32 people and injuring more than 340. Shanti suffered no physical harm. All of his wounds are psychological, but they are deep and unbearable.

An open investigation, the shocked family

In the years that followed, the young woman tried to rebuild herself, to overcome her trauma. Vain. She goes to the hospital and tries to commit suicide in 2020. Your pain is unbearable. To the point where she decides to request euthanasia, which is legal in Belgium under certain conditions. She was denied this exceptional service on several occasions, but two psychiatrists eventually concluded that she met the criteria. Shanti was therefore euthanized in May 2022 at the age of 23. At that time, an investigation was launched by the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office, which eventually concluded that the operation was legal.
