Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a right wrist injury in a 34-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. Here’s what you need to know:
- Burrow appeared to be in pain after throwing a touchdown pass to running back Joe Mixon in the second quarter.
- After the game, he went to the medical tent and tried to throw passes on the sideline, but was unsuccessful.
- As he jogged to the locker room, Amazon’s Kaylee Hartung reported that Burrow “couldn’t grab the ball and couldn’t lift his elbow.”
- Burrow was 11 of 17 passing for 101 yards and a score before leaving the game. He was replaced by backup quarterback Jake Browning, who completed 8 of 14 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown.
What it means to lose Burrow
The worst-case scenario occurred for the Bengals. As long as they have Burrow, they have a chance, and the immediacy with which Burrow reached for his right hand after the touchdown pass to Mixon was a bad sign. Things only got worse when he tried twice to make a throw on the sideline but failed and ended up crouching in pain after the attempt.
Burrow has battled injuries all year and is finally recovering from a calf injury. That’s the last thing he or Cincinnati needs at a critical point in the season with back-to-back AFC North games. — Paul Dehner Jr., Bengals beat writer
What you can expect from Browning
Browning won the backup quarterback job over Trevor Siemian in training camp, but it wasn’t pretty for much of it. The Bengals liked the development of Browning, a former undrafted free agent from Washington.
Still, he has never played in a regular-season game and the idea of him being thrown into the fire at this point is far from what Cincinnati could be prepared for. Browning has good mobility and that could be a trait that Zac Taylor prefers. – Dehner
