A “Last Generation” climate activist has been sentenced to eight months in prison without parole in Berlin. According to the group, it is the largest punishment ever imposed on a member for peaceful protests.

A climate activist from the “Last Generation” group was sentenced to eight months in prison without parole in Berlin on Wednesday. This was confirmed by the deputy spokeswoman for the Berlin criminal courts to rbb|24 on Thursday. The 41-year-old took part in several “Latest Generation” roadblocks between October 10th and 19th, 2022.

In two cases it stuck to the road with adhesive. In one case, the trial ended, the court spokeswoman continued.

So far, almost 2,500 cases have been opened against climate activists in Berlin

“Last Generation” activists have so far blocked hundreds of streets in Berlin. A challenge for the police. She has already called authorities in other federal states to help. And he used hundreds of liters of rapeseed oil against the blockages. more

Judgment not yet final

The sentence of imprisonment without parole was imposed on the defendant for attempted coercion, as well as for coercion and resistance to law enforcement officers. The Public Prosecutor’s Office had asked for a fine of 90 daily stays of 15 euros each. The level of punishment is new: in previous convictions, sentences of three to four months in prison were imposed.

As the 41-year-old woman stated at trial that she wanted to continue protesting, the court did not see a favorable social prognosis. This would be necessary for a suspended sentence.

“Last Generation” first reported the ruling in a press release. A spokesperson for the group said: “The huge differences in sentences for the same type of peaceful protest are absurd. Acquittals and dismissals on the one hand, months of prison on the other.”

The verdict is not yet legally binding. An appeal or review can be filed within a week.
