TIMELINE – The Biden administration is stiffening its stance on China and setting its own pace. This protectionism has provoked an outcry from America’s partners.
“We’re still trying to understand what that means.” Ordinary scene from the life of a global corporation at the time of the great Sino-US freeze. A French boss is trying to clarify with his lawyers the consequences for his industrial group of the texts published in Washington on October 7 and which will apply from the 12th. The goal is to take away from Beijing anything that might accelerate its race for military applications (e.g. artificial intelligence or supercomputers) and its quest for strategic autonomy under the Made in China 2025 plan. The export of components and advanced equipment and the provision of services by American nationals are therefore prohibited.
