The 2023 BET Awards were presented Sunday night, with Latto, Beyoncé, Coco Jones, Teyana “Spike Tey” Taylor and Burna Boy among the winners, who were announced during the live broadcast.

The awards recognize the year’s best performances in music, television, film and sports. The ceremony also celebrated 50 years of hip-hop throughout the show, which aired on BET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. During the broadcast, winners were announced in only a fraction of the categories. (See the red carpet arrivals.)

The unhosted show began with a cast of artists including opener Lil Uzi Vert as well as hip-hop pioneers The Sugarhill Gang performing their groundbreaking “Rapper’s Delight.” There was also a tribute to the late Biz Markie with his “Just a Friend”. Other memorable moments included tributes to Tupac Shakur and Takeoff (the latter by his Migos bandmates Quavo and Offset), and a performance of Warren G’s “Regulate.” Tyga later took the stage to perform “Rack City.” The show also included a lifetime achievement tribute to Busta Rhymes, who performed a medley of his hits towards the end of the show, followed by an all-star tribute to hip-hop.

Patti LaBelle paid tribute to Tina Turner, who died May 24, with a performance of “(Simply) The Best,” but she forgot the words for a few moments. “I’m trying, y’all,” she told the crowd, before later singing, “Anyway, I can’t make out the words.”

Coco Jones took the stage to perform shortly after her Best New Artist award. Teyana “Spike Tey” Taylor was named Video Director of the Year and her mother, accepting on her behalf, video-called her daughter from the stage so she could make the acceptance remotely. Beyoncé won the BET Her and Viewer’s Choice awards but was not present to accept the award as she is on tour.

Before the cast of BET’s Sistas Latto presented the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist award, they expressed their support for the Writers Guild of America in light of its ongoing strike as it seeks a new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers .

At the start of the show, Drake led the nominees with seven, followed by GloRilla with six and 21 Savage and Lizzo with five each. Beyoncé, Burna Boy, Chris Brown, Ice Spice and SZA each received four nominations. The nominees were selected by the BET Voting Academy, a group of entertainment professionals and influencers from the fields of music, media, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations and the creative arts.
