Beyoncé opened up about her “rebellious” decision to cut her hair into a pixie style over a decade ago.
In an interview for Essence's March and April beauty issue, the 42-year-old singer said she decided to cut her hair during a “very big emotional transformation” in her life.

During her interview, Beyoncé gave a thoughtful response to a question about her short hair era and whether or not it represented a “life change.”
“It did. That’s true,” she said. “I love how we associate a certain hairstyle with moments in our lives, like that short hair moment.”
Recalling that special day, she said she didn't have a specific hairstyle in mind but just wanted to “free herself” by cutting her hair.
“I remember the day I decided to just cut all my hair off,” she said. “I didn’t have a specific style in mind.”
She then confirmed that she was going through a significant time in her life.
“It wasn't an aesthetic decision, but it was a very big emotional transformation and metamorphosis that I went through,” she said.
“A big part of my identity as an artist is tied to flowing hair,” she explained. “When I cut my hair, I was rebelling against being this woman that society thinks I am.”
The 16 Carriages hitmaker said she had just welcomed her daughter Blue Ivy, now 12, and wanted to break free from the expectations placed on her about what kind of mother she should be.

“I was a new mom, and something about the liberation of becoming a mom made me want to just get rid of it all,” she said. “It was a physical representation of me shedding the expectations placed on me. 'I just wanted to take it off.'
She recalled that, to the surprise of her hairdresser and friend Neal Farinah, she picked up the scissors and cut her own long hair, which she said was done “very intentionally.”
“It was really long, really thick and really healthy,” Beyoncé recalled. “I just got the scissors and chopped it off.”
“This is what I had to do,” she added. “And after that I became super brave.
“It was the first step to many other courageous decisions I made in my life and career that led to who I am now.”
