Bianca Andreescu has been out since last August due to a back injury she suffered at the National Bank Open in Montreal and is still unable to hit balls.
Interviewed on Thursday during the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) media day in Montreal, the 2019 US Open champion is trying to keep her spirits up, even if her recovery is taking much longer than she expected. I would have imagined it.
“I'm doing everything I can to get back into action as quickly as possible, but unfortunately this type of injury takes time,” she said. I'm still suffering from my back injury, but I'm getting better every day and I'm very confident for the 2024 season.
“I have felt such pain in the past and was able to return to the game after a month's absence, but the X-rays don't lie,” continued Andreescu, who is suffering from a stress fracture in his back. It’s a bad injury and the worst since my foot injury.”
Six weeks of morale in heels
What are his morals? “My morale was not good for the first six weeks and I was devastated,” she admitted. It happened because I had no choice but to accept it, but my level of frustration is very high with all the injuries piling up. It makes you sweat.”
When does Andreescu think she will take the necklace back? “After the Australian Open or for the American tour in Indian Wells and Miami,” said the 23-year-old slugger. I'm sad to miss Australia. I don't know how long I have to be gone. Doctors tell me that recovery from this type of injury varies from person to person.”
Dream of winning the Billie Jean King trophy
Although she would have preferred to have been there, Andreeescu was pleased with the Canadians' victory at the Billie Jean King Cup in Seville in November. Canada won the first title in its history by defeating Italy in the final.
“Canada’s win is incredible and great for Canadian tennis, especially women’s tennis,” she said. I'm very sad not to have been there because it's one of my dreams to win this title. I really wanted to be there. We can do it again. I’m very proud of the girls.”
Olympic qualification
In addition to four additional rackets for the doubles, Canada can also send four men and four women in the singles draw to the Games in Paris. “At the moment my ranking wouldn’t allow me to qualify,” said the woman, who is ranked 96th in the WTA rankings. I always wanted to take part in the Olympic tournament. For this reason, I hope that I have enough motivation to win as many games as possible to qualify. I have to dig deep to qualify. I would be willing to play doubles if I qualify. At Roland Garros this year I reached the mixed doubles final.”
