US President Joe Biden has expressed confidence that China will not expand its maneuvers around Taiwan and that the situation will continue to escalate. “It worries me that they’ve gone this far,” he said today, en route to the flood plains in the US state of Kentucky, in reference to the naval and air force’s biggest military maneuvers in the waters around Taiwan. “But I don’t think they go beyond that.”
Observers fear there could be military clashes with Taiwan’s armed forces. The US is also present in the region with strong naval units.
With extensive military exercises, China reacted to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, which the government in Beijing considers a violation of Chinese sovereignty. It regards Taiwan as a breakaway part of the People’s Republic. Earlier this week, China continued its military exercises, which should have ended on Sunday, against Taiwan.
