In a departure from his previous tactics, Joe Biden (photo) directly attacked Donald Trump this Thursday (28) in a speech in the city of Tempe, Arizona.reports the New York Times.
The US president accused his predecessor of inciting violence and striving for unlimited power. He also said he would plot to undermine the American Constitution when he returns to the White House in elections scheduled for next year. “This is a dangerous idea that a president is above the law and there are no limits to his power,” the Democrat said in the speech.
Then Biden gave up the habit of not mentioning his Republican rival by name: “Trump claims that the Constitution gave him, and I quote, ‘the right to do whatever he wants as president.’ I’ve never heard that a president said that in jest. Guided not by the Constitution or by general service and decency to our countrymen, but by revenge and retribution.”
The president also noted his predecessor’s recent comments in which he promised “retaliation” against his enemies, accused NBC News of “treason” and suggested that Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, deserved to be executed. “THE MAGA [‘Make America Great Again’, slogan de Trump] It is a threat to the foundations of our democratic institutions. It is also a threat to the character of our nation.”
According to the NYT, Biden has for months highlighted the benefits of his policies and ignored the Republican race for the party’s seat in the election. However, these repeated speeches did not improve his approval rating. In polls, many voters say they are concerned about the Democrat’s age (80 years old).
