Biden says the Super Bowl shooting in Kansas City “should shock us and shame us into action” and urges Congress to pass gun laws after the latest attack killed a mother of two and injured 22

President Joe Biden has cited the recent shootings in Kansas City as supposed evidence for lawmakers that they should support his attempt to ban assault weapons.

The lengthy statement, issued about six hours after the shooting at the city's Super Bowl parade, said the day's events should “shock” and “shame” us into becoming actors.

He added that the recent mass shootings in the US were “profound” and used this to urge Americans to “make do.” [their] Voice heard in Congress.'

The 81-year-old commander-in-chief further claimed the incident “cut deeply into the American soul” after at least one person was killed and 21 others were injured.

Each of the three suspected shooters has now been arrested, thanks in part to the heroism of the ordinary people present. Biden ignored those actions in his bulletin – and instead used the attack as a talking point shortly after seeing the Valentine's Day decorations on the White House front lawn.

“The Super Bowl is the most unifying event in America,” began the first-term president, months before the expected duel with Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

“Nothing brings us together anymore,” he continued. “And celebrating a Super Bowl victory is a moment that brings with it a joy that cannot be compared to the winning team and its fans.”

“That this joy turns into tragedy in Kansas City today,” he added, “cuts deep into the American soul.”

The appeal to the collective American consciousness continued as the 344-word statement continued, with Biden bluntly claiming at one point: “Today's events should move us, shock us, shame us into action.”

'What are we waiting for? What else do we have to see? How many families still need to be torn apart? he asked in his latest push to pass federal gun control legislation.

“It’s time to act.” That’s where I stand. And I ask the country to stand by me.'

He urged viewers to raise their voices[s] We've heard in Congress, so let's finally act to ban assault weapons.

“Restrict the use of high-capacity magazines, strengthen background checks and keep guns away from those who have no right to own or handle them,” he said.

“We know what we have to do, we just need the courage to do it.”

He noted that the shooting occurred on the sixth anniversary of the Parkland shooting, in which 17 people died at the hands of a 19-year-old gunman armed with an AR-15.

Biden has previously said that if Congress cannot completely ban assault weapons, he should raise the minimum age to purchase such weapons from 18 to 21.

“The epidemic of gun violence is tearing families and communities apart every day,” he continued. “Some make the headlines.” A lot of it doesn’t.

“We have to decide who we are as a country,” he continued, referring to a citizen’s right “to go to school, to go to church, to walk in the streets.” [or] “To attend a Super Bowl celebration without fear of losing your life.”

“Jill and I pray for the dead and injured in Kansas City today,” he concluded. “And that our country finds the resolve to end this senseless epidemic of gun violence that is tearing us apart at the seams.”

Shortly before — and hours after the shooting made headlines — Biden and first lady Jill posed for a photo op with Valentine's Day decorations on the North Lawn of the White House.

“We have to decide who we are as a country,” he continued, referring to a citizen’s right “to go to school, to go to church, to walk in the streets.” [or] “To attend a Super Bowl celebration without fear of losing your life.”

Annual data show that from Texas to Maine there have been a total of 47 mass gun killings between 2023 and this year — a number fueled by other tragedies such as those at a Louisville bank in April and a Nashville school in March.

In each case – as in most other mass murders – the perpetrators committed the killings using an assault weapon that is currently regulated on a state-by-state basis.

Biden and other progressives are instead calling for an overarching approach as the number of incidents last year reached the highest level since statistics were first collected in 2006.

Even more concerning is the fact that there are four more incidents than the year before, when shootings at a school in Uvalde and a supermarket in Buffalo also set records.

The statistics come from perhaps the most reliable mass killing database in the country. They point to an upward trend that Biden is trying to slow.

He had also called for a ban on high-capacity magazines and a repeal of immunity that protects gun manufacturers from legal liability if their weapons are used in such incidents.

One of the men was filmed being attacked by 46-year-old Paul Contreras, whose 23-year-old Alyssa managed to capture her on her cell phone just moments after her father jumped into action.

Visiting from Nebraska, Alyssa continued filming as the shooter was arrested – after seemingly trying to escape the hectic scene on foot.

Several parade-goers within earshot noticed this and shouted for others to stop his advance. Contreras heard those calls and didn't think twice before lunging at the suspect, he said.

Officers, meanwhile, said they had handcuffed two other people but had not yet contacted Contreras, he said. He recalled watching a gun fall from the suspect's hand after police officers said they seized at least one assault weapon at one of the crime scenes. Their investigation is still ongoing and all suspects are now in custody.
