The President of the United States, Joe Biden, is due to announce plans this Thursday (20th) to increase his country’s funding for the Amazon Fund, the Brazilian government’s international funding program that funds action against deforestation in the Amazon rainforest .

According to a White House document Biden will ask the US Congress for $500 million (around 2.5 billion real) this Thursday for background, to be useds over five years.

The value is ten times more than originally planned by Washington in February, when the United States announced its intention to join the Amazon Fund of which Norway and Germany already belong. The UK is also considering joining the fund, which was abolished during the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro and reactivated this year.

Also according to the White House statement, Biden will convene a virtual meeting of the Forum of Major Economies on Energy and Climate to advance support for action to combat global warming. It is the group’s fourth meeting under his presidency.
