According to forecasts of the North American press, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, won the Democratic primaries in the state of Michigan this Tuesday (27). On the other hand, Biden became the target of protest from voters who decided to mark the “nonbinding” option on the ballot. Donald Trump won the Republican primaries.

In the Democratic primary, some voters are protesting Biden's support for Israel in the Gaza conflict. Michigan is the state with the largest population of Arab Americans.

A wing of the Democratic Party decided to launch the “Listen to Michigan” campaign to send a warning to Biden and encourage voters to vote for the “nonbinding” option in the party primaries.

By choosing this option, voters voted for the party but did not support any candidate.

As of the last update to this report, results showed that around 16% of voters chose the “nonbinding” option. See below:

  • Joe Biden: 79.0%
  • Not committed: 15.7%
  • Other: 5.3%

Although the movement points to a significant share of voters, Biden's victory in the primaries was already taken for granted.

On the other hand, the incumbent president faces the challenge of being reelected to the White House. Michigan is one of the electiondecisive states or “swing state” where the dispute with Donald Trump is intense, violent and unpredictable.

In the 2020 election, for example, Biden beat Trump in Michigan by a margin of just 2.8 percentage points, or around 150,000 votes.

Michigan voters also went to the polls to cast their ballots in the Republican primary. Forecasts point to Donald Trump winning the state.

As of this report's last update, the former president was leading by a wide margin. See below:

  • Donald Trump: 65.7%
  • Nikki Haley: 30.0%
  • Not committed: 2.2%
  • Other: 2.1%

Haley, who has yet to beat Trump in any of the Republican primaries, has said she will not give up the race to become the party's nominee in this year's presidential election.
