Monitor the counting of votes in the US elections it can be a tedious activity. Especially if you are used to the speed with which votes are calculated in Brazil.
It’s been five days since the midterm elections in the United States, but it’s still unclear whether control of the US Congress will go to Democrats or Republicans. Or split between the two.
The only thing that is certain so far is that the conservative wave in favor of exPresident Donald Trump has failed to materialize.
It’s also fair to say that the Democratic Party under President Joe Biden has proven more competitive than expected. For in recent history, midterm elections have punished the party occupying the White House.
Democratic Party wins Arizona seat
The fact is, with Arizona’s definition of a Senate seat, the Democrats are one seat away from retaining control of the House.
Mark Kelly’s reelection in Arizona was confirmed late Friday night. Democrats and Republicans now have 49 seats each.
With Vice President Kamala Harris also President of the Senate and letting the Minerva vote to break the tie in the House, the Democratic Party needs 50 seats to claim control.
There are only two seats up for grabs in the US: one in Nevada and one in Georgia.
In Nevada, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto and Republican Adam Laxalt are fighting for the remaining seat at stake.
In 94% of polls counted, the difference between them is not 900 votes.
The result should be available soon. Probably in the next few days.
And even if Catherine Cortez Masto doesn’t win the Nevada contest, Democrats still have one last chance in Georgia.
But if the decision is left to the Southern state, the definition of Senate control won’t take place until next month.
That’s because Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker will likely have to decide the seat in the second round, scheduled for Dec. 6.
Control of the US House of Representatives also remains undefined
The dispute over control of the House of Representatives also remains open.
A little more than 20 places were still available on this Saturday morning.
The Republican Party has already secured 211 seats. It’s just seven from the magic number 218 to control the house.
However, the Democrats are guaranteed 203 seats and the open races remain too close to predict a winner just yet.
