FOXBORO, Mass. — Longtime New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick answered questions Wednesday about a report that team owner Robert Kraft plans to leave him at the end of the season.
NBC Sports Boston's Tom E. Curran reported Monday that the team concluded after New England's dismal 10-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 12 in Frankfurt, Germany will separate from Belichick in the 2023 season.
“When they came back from Germany, the conversations I had that week made it very clear that a decision had been made,” Curran said. “They wanted to play the strings, and at the end of the year they would part ways, for a variety of reasons… You don't fire Bill Belichick during the season. It’s just not going to happen.”
During his weekly media release on Wednesday, a reporter asked Belichick: “If you understand it yourself, do you know anything about Robert not inviting you back next year?”
“I’m getting ready for Kansas City. That’s what I do,” Belichick said.
Belichick, who has been on the New England sideline since 2000, was also asked if he wanted to continue coaching.
“Yes, I’m preparing for Kansas City,” Belichick said simply.
When Belichick was asked about his future in New England, he deflected again, saying, “I'm preparing for Kansas City.”
Belichick has already established himself as arguably the best coach in NFL history, leading the Patriots to six Super Bowl victories while cementing the franchise as one of the greatest dynasties the sport has ever seen.
The Patriots will watch this year's NFL postseason from home after officially bowing out of contention last weekend.
New England enters its Week 15 game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a weak record of 3-10.
