Billy Bush is open about interviewing Lisa Marie Presley just 48 hours before her death

Speaking about being one of the last people to interview Lisa Marie Presley before her sudden and tragic death Thursday at the age of 54, Billy Bush told PEOPLE on Friday, “It feels awful.”

The television host, who did an interview for Extra during the 80th annual Golden Globes earlier Tuesday, had the opportunity to speak with Elvis’ daughter on the red carpet less than 48 hours before her death.

Bush, 51, emotionally told the publication, “I feel my heart is very heavy for just about anyone who is in pain.”

Billy recalled that both he and Lisa Marie “only talked about their father. And what qualities of her father did Austin Butler get right…the singing, the looks, the look, the sparkle.”

“This is a woman who has just experienced so much grief in her life. It’s just impossible to fathom,” he added, referring to the death of her own father at age 42 in 1977 and the loss of her own son Benjamin in 2020, whose death was ruled a suicide. He was only 27 years old.

She was accompanied that night by Jerry Schilling, a longtime family friend who stood by her closely during the brief interview just before the awards ceremony began.

Speaking to Fox LA recently, Bush elaborated on the interview with Lisa Marie, explaining that both he and Jerry “each grabbed an arm” to help her up the two steps that led to the interview platform.

He added: “And it was clear she wouldn’t be able to get up the two flights of stairs. I went down and met her on the carpet herself. You can see her hanging from Jerry’s arm…”

He also expressed that after his interview, Lisa Marie immediately entered the Beverly Hilton to watch the ceremony. Bush was also the last person to interview Michael Jackson before his death in 2009. Lisa Marie and Michael were married from 1994 to 1996.

Bush predicted “a wonderful night for Elvis” early in Tuesday night’s interview, in which Lisa Marie stood alongside her longtime boyfriend Schilling, who was also a talent manager who worked closely with Elvis.

Billy then asked her if she had met Butler, to which she said to Schilling, “I’ll grab your arm” and crossed her right arm with Schilling’s left arm.

She said she adores Butler and was “blown away” after seeing his performance in the film (which earned him a win for Best Actor – Feature Drama at the ceremony).

During the chat, Lisa Marie said she thought Butler hit the “properties.” [and] talking without doing it like in a cartoon like it was done in the past.

She added: “It’s kind of done in a funny, facetious way [Elvis] spoke, but Austin actually got it and did it perfectly without making it weird. Schilling noted that Butler “did not exaggerate” aspects of his performance as Elvis.

Bush asked Lisa Marie if she lived in the Montecito-Santa Barbara area — which was hit by storms and flooding earlier this week — and she said she “did it at one point,” noting that the fallout from the Sturms are “really terrible”. .

Lisa Marie was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital earlier Thursday after reportedly suffering cardiac arrest, TMZ reported.

Before being rushed to a nearby hospital, she was resuscitated by both her ex-husband Danny Keough and paramedics, which recovered her pulse.

However, sources told TMZ that Lisa Marie was “declared brain dead” upon arrival at the hospital. The sources added to the tabloid that her family had reportedly signed a non-resuscitation (DNR) order.

Hours later, she suffered a second cardiac arrest, and news of her sudden and shocking death was announced not long after.
