It’s been a little over a month since Microsoft integrated ChatGPT into Bing and its Edge browser. Whether the search results offered by the boosted Bing engine are sometimes strange and the conversations with it sometimes questionable, Microsoft keeps going forward and enriching its service with Bing Image Creator, a tool based on an enhanced version of DALL∙E model of the Redmond partner OpenAI.
Microsoft explains that Bing Image Creator allows the user to create an image simply by using their own words to describe the image they want to see. Thus, it is now possible to generate written and visual content in one place, from the chat.
According to Microsoft, data from Bing shows that images are one of the most searched categories, second only to general web searches. In the past, searches were limited to images that already existed on the internet. Now there’s almost no limit to what you can explore and create, says Redmond proudly.
For those in the Bing preview, Bing Image Creator will be fully integrated into the Bing Chat experience and will be launched in creative mode first. From a description of an image, possibly with additional context such as location or activity, and an art style, Image Creator creates an image.
The Bing Image Creator preview will also be available in Microsoft Edge. To use Bing Image Creator in Edge, simply click the Bing Image Creator icon in the sidebar to create your image, or access the tool from Bing Chat in Edge.
Microsoft says to anticipate criticism that it is guided by its principles of responsible AI. Therefore, to limit the potential abuse of Image Creator, Microsoft is working with its partner OpenAI, which developed DALL∙E, to provide an experience that encourages responsible use of Image Creator. We made sure that OpenAI protections were built into Image Creator along with additional protections, says Microsoft. For example, we have controls in place to limit the generation of harmful or dangerous images. When our system detects that a potentially dangerous image could be generated by a command prompt, it blocks the prompt and warns the user. We’re also clarifying that Image Creator images are AI-generated, and we’re including a modified Bing icon in the lower-left corner of each image to indicate the image was created with Image Creator.
