Although Rede Globo has been granted radio and television broadcasting rights in Brazil for another 15 years, public admiration, trust and ratings continue to decline.
To do this, suffice it to see that in the middle of the week of Christmas, a period that moves commerce, tourism, travel and, of course, television programming, the Marinho channel noticed a negative fact: it had few viewers and was sometimes in operation ins Red.
The result was so bad that it was considered the worst of the year. Both Jornal Nacional, Soap Operas and Fantástico had alarming audiences during the Christmas weekend on December 24th and 25th.
According to Kantar Ibope, which calculates the ratings of Brazilian channels, on Saturday (24th) William Bonner’s JN had the lowest rating in news history: 15.5 points in the São Paulo metropolitan area.
Globo’s 9 p.m. soap operas, which always drew surprisingly large viewership, were disappointing. “Travessia”, by the experienced author Glória Perez (incidentally one of the few still on the station), scores 14.7 points. This index is considered the worst ever for a primetime plot.
Do you think Rede Globo’s bitterness is over? The next day, Sunday (25), World Day, families at home, more time to watch TV and what happens? Globo’s average viewership remained weak, remaining at 10.4 points. Not even “Domingão do Huck” with its controversy surrounding businessman Luciano Hang and the demonstrators in front of the General Headquarters managed to reach the public. The Attraction and “Fantástico”, the Marinho family’s main programs, scored 14.2 and 15.3 points, respectively.
The lesson the Brazilians are teaching at Globo is that if there is no publicity, it makes no difference to get a concession and be able to operate in the country. The most important thing is to change the proposal to stop insulting and criticizing the population, to offer truly impartial journalism.
