NANNING, March 23 (Xinhua).

Mao Yanfeng, director of the Civil Aviation Administration’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Center, announced the discovery at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.

The “black box” was badly damaged and the investigation team is working to determine whether it was the flight data recorder or the voice recorder in the cockpit, Mao said.

The rain complicated rescuers’ work on Wednesday, the third day that rescuers toured the area in search of the remains of the 132 people who were on board the plane and the other “black box.”

On Wednesday afternoon, personnel searching the area used specialized equipment to scan the underground area of the impact site and also expanded the search radius.

The weather was normal and there were no dangerous weather conditions when the plane crashed to the ground, Mao said.

According to the records of airtoground communications between the crew and air traffic controllers, the exchange was normal from the moment the plane took off from Kunming to the sudden loss of altitude as it approached its destination, the official added.

The crashed aircraft, a Boeing 737, was delivered to China Eastern Airlines on June 22, 2015. at the same press conference.

The flight crew consisted of a captain and two copilots. The pilot licenses and medical certificates of all three were within their validity periods. They are also in good health and have rich flying experience, Sun said.
