Actress Carrie Bernans, known for her role as Dora Milaje in Marvel's “Black Panther” franchise films, was seriously injured in a hit-and-run in New York on January 1.

Ms. Bernans was eating outside a restaurant when a driver fleeing police drove onto the patio where she was, NBC News reports.

The 29-year-old actress and stuntwoman remained unconscious and suffered numerous broken bones, bruises, fractures and chipped teeth, according to reports shared by her mother Patricia Lee on Instagram.

The latter also points out that her daughter is unable to breastfeed her eight-month-old son “due to the medication she is given between surgeries to relieve pain.”

In a Gofundme she created to help cover her medical bills, Ms Bernans says she is “full of hope and confidence in this new chapter of her life”.

For their part, the New York Police Department says that before the accident, police responded to an argument between a 44-year-old driver and his 34-year-old passenger.

Officers attempted to get the car to park, but the driver instead decided to drive onto the sidewalk, where he allegedly collided with a shopping cart and three pedestrians.

He is also said to have hit two parked cars and a moving vehicle.

Two police officers and the passenger of the vehicle were also injured.

The driver was eventually arrested and remains in custody.

Carrie Bernans has appeared in several films and series as an actress and stuntwoman over the years, the most popular being Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame, in which she played the character Dora Milaje.
