Black Panther director Ryan Coogler wrongly accused of bank robbery

Bank employees miscalculated Ryan Coogler staged a robbery, so they called the police, and the famous director was actually briefly handcuffed.

According to an Atlanta police report obtained by TMZ, Coogler was detained after he stopped at Bank of America to make a transaction back in January — a completely legitimate transaction, but one teller took it differently.

Coogler wore brightly colored sunglasses and a COVID face mask — not uncommon, of course — but he handed the cashier a withdrawal receipt that had a note written on the back.

We were told that his message read: “I would like to withdraw $12,000 in cash from my checking account. Please count your money elsewhere. I would like to be careful.” Understandable given the amount of money he was receiving, but this led the cashier to think something fishy was going on and called the police to attempt a robbery.

When the police arrived, they detained two people waiting outside in an SUV for Ryan, and then went inside and led the director himself out in handcuffs.

After an investigation, the police said the whole thing was just a huge mistake and the blame lay with the BoA employee, who is described in the report as a pregnant black woman.

According to the report, when the cashier went to make a transaction on her computer, it triggered a sort of alert. So she told her boss that Coogler was trying to rob a bank and they called 911.

Eventually, the cops figured out it was a slip and Ryan didn’t really do anything wrong. Ryan didn’t seem too pleased. The report notes that after everyone was released, he asked for dog tag numbers from all the responding officers.

He’s been to Georgia a lot over the past year filming the Black Panther sequel, which itself has been a dramatic process with cast injuries and supposed COVID conspiracy talk. And now… this.
