Blake Wheelers contract redeemed

Blake Wheeler’s contract… redeemed?

Forward Blake Wheeler’s days with the Winnipeg Jets were numbered.

Although a transaction is always possible, the most plausible option would be a contract purchase, Steve Dangle, a well-known figure in the Canadian ice hockey world, reported Tuesday, thanks in large part to his popular podcast. Winnipeg Free Press reporter Mike McIntyre also discussed the possibility of Wheeler’s contract being bought out by the Jets by June 30 or within the next 10 days.

The 36-year-old American has only one year left on his contract, during which he will receive $8.25 million.

If his contract is bought out, he will account for $2.75 million on the Manitoba team’s payroll for the next two seasons.

In the 2022–23 season, Wheeler had 55 points, including 16 goals, in 72 games. He picked up six points in five playoff games.

The face of the Jets could change significantly over the next few weeks as forward Pierre-Luc Dubois and goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck are keen to leave the organisation.
