Washington, June 27 (EFE). – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday congratulated Conservative leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on his re-election as Greece’s prime minister, reaffirming the alliance between the two governments.
In a call, the US diplomat offered Greece to continue cooperation between the two countries to promote “regional stability” in the eastern Mediterranean, the State Department said in a statement.
In return, Blinken thanked Mitsotakis, whose New Democracy party won an absolute majority in the Greek parliament, for his “support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
After this Sunday’s elections, New Democracy won 40.5% of the vote, catapulting Mitsotakis to victory and allowing him to go back to governing alone as he has for the past four years.
The result was a new setback for Syriza’s left-wing opposition and in particular for its leader, former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who received just 17.8% of the vote, even below the result of last year’s elections.
Although the country’s economy has yet to reach pre-debt crisis levels of 2010, Greeks recognize the increases in pensions and wages, the arrival of investment and the country’s growth above the European Union average.
This is the first time since the financial crisis erupted in 2010 that a Greek prime minister has been re-elected after a four-year term. EFE
