The US president’s statement came hours after a meeting with the Chinese leader in San Francisco, California. The two are in town to attend the annual summit of the 21 member countries of Apec (AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation).

China and the United States are the world’s two largest economies. This is the first time in 2023 that Biden and Xi will meet in person.

The two countries experienced moments of tension throughout the year, with the war in Ukraine and the episode of the alleged Chinese spy balloon entering North American airspace in February.
