Raoul Bova took over Terence Hill in Don Matteo 13, the hit series that has captivated Rai 1 audiences to television for over 20 years. The actor plays Don Massimo, a dear friend of the most famous priest on Italian television, and introduces himself with a triumph Legend TT 900 (Don Matteo always used the bike). Bova tells Autovelox how things went on set, her relationship with two wheels and the passion for the Vespa that she used to swim with as a teenager.
A priest driving a triumph: what kind of character is Don Massimo?
“The fact of being a Don who shows up on a bike already classifies the quality and type of priest we are dealing with. Massimo has a combative past with great conflicts, he is a dreamer, a traveler, a person who is used to being alone often because his previous job forced him to come to terms with himself”.
How did it go with the triumph on set?
“We didn’t attach importance to the brand because Massimo rode a bike that lived through it, that had a past, a precise history. This bike, even if a little ruined, reflects my character’s experience even painful. Despite this, Massimo remains upright, solid and will not lose heart”.
What is your relationship with two wheels?
“It has changed over time, I switched from Vespa to the most demanding bikes and found myself riding motard on the cross circuits for a while for professional reasons”.
“Bicycles must be carried very carefully, important rules must be respected: you must never forget that they can be very beautiful and also very dangerous, so I recommend that you always keep your head on your shoulders.”
Do you have a special anecdote that happened on the set of Don Matteo?
“The fact that Massimo came to Spoleto on a motorbike was controversial: we had to decide whether to use the motorbike, the car or some other means. Once we made our decision, all that remained was to understand what kind of bike we should ride. We chose to mount it on two wheels to achieve the sense of freedom that the character brought. Massimo moves quickly and immediately reaches his goal: the bike also had to represent his personality”.
Is there a heart movement that has shaped your life?
“My absolute love is the Vespa, I’ve used it since I was 16. The other bikes that followed were all very stimulating but never like my PX 125E.”
And what other two wheels did he have?
“Several, especially sports, like Ducati”.
Do you like driving on the race track?
“I tried, but it’s not my favorite sport. It was a need more related to work. If you do this job, you need to know how to drive a horse, a motorcycle and a car.”
I imagine that he made many conquests with the Vespa at the age of 16.
“In fact, I often went to swim training with it. It’s the vehicle that I liked the most and that I still own today: my father kept it lovingly in his garage and I drive it every now and then”.
