A winter storm warning is in effect for parts of Newfoundland. Blizzard conditions are possible and up to 40cm of snow could fall across the province. Forecast.

Up to 35 cm of snow

It's been a long time since Quebec has had plenty of snow, much to the dismay of outdoor enthusiasts. Elsewhere in the country some are more pampered, such as in Newfoundland. Snowfall could reach 35 cm in the province. Some models even speak of accumulations of up to 40 cm. This could be the heaviest snowfall of the season so far. Snow will fall on Newfoundland's south coast Friday morning. Snowfall is expected to increase rapidly throughout the day. We observed 5 cm of rainfall per hour, particularly in Burin and the southwest of the Avalon Peninsula.

TEMP2TEMP2

Strong winds

In addition to significant amounts of snow, there will also be wind. Some areas such as Saint John's could experience gusts of 50 mph or more. Power outages and damage may occur due to these strong winds.

TEMP3 (1)TEMP3 (1)

Heavy snowfall and blizzard

Due to heavy snow and limited visibility in some areas, road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly through Friday evening. Drivers are advised to avoid non-essential journeys as much as possible. Remember that we speak of a snowstorm when there are winds of 40 km/h or more, visibility is 400 meters or less and when these two criteria last at least 4 hours.

TEMP4TEMP4

In contrast to December

As this storm approaches, St. John's Airport experienced its driest December on record with 55 mm of rain and 42 cm of snow. With the active weather forecast this week, Newfoundland could see accumulations of 15 cm or more in a single storm for the first time. December also broke records in Quebec, but the situation could soon change in favor of snow… To be continued!
