James and Madison Miller had meticulously studied the voyage. The couple relocated from England to Nashville, Tennessee, the woman’s hometown. As always, there would be Bluebell, an adopted black Labrador who is about five years old. Madison would have come alone the day before to prepare the new house for the dog.
She would be joined the next day by James and Bluebell, who would be traveling together (Bluebell in the hold). At least that was the plan.
But a glaring error by British Airways and its cargo division Iag Cargo resulted in Bluebell being put on a different flight from her owner.
James landed in Nashville as planned. Bluebell, on the other hand, was sent in the opposite direction: to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, seven thousand miles from Tennessee.
The couple spotted him at the Nashville airport after waiting in vain for his dog’s cage. Then a nightmare began: It took the airline two more days and three long-haul international flights to get Bluebell to its – the right – destination. During this time, the Millers say, he had little food and little natural light.
The couple have asked British Airways for compensation because they claim the consequences of their mistake are quite serious: “We can’t leave Bluebell alone for a moment; she cries all the time, she broke up her kennel, she damaged a front door, we had to put her sedatives and we’re having a team of vets and behaviorists follow her.”
Beyond the question of money, there is above all the great, absolutely avoidable stress that Bleubell was exposed to.
The hope is that the Labrador will soon adjust to his new home, surrounded by the love of his owners.
