Bob Dylan to release book dedicated to the art of songwriting

Bob Dylan is known as a legendary songwriter, and he’s giving fans a glimpse into their thoughts for an upcoming book, publishing company Simon & Schuster announced on Tuesday (March 8).

Modern Song Philosophy, which Dylan began writing in 2010, dives deep into the art and craft of songwriting. The book features over 60 essays on songs by other artists, from Elvis Costello to Nina Simone, where he analyzes “the trap of simple rhymes, breaks down how adding one syllable can shrink a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal.” – the press release says. Almost 150 carefully selected photographs are included throughout the book, as well as a number of riffs that, taken together, resemble a poem.

“The release of Bob Dylan’s kaleidoscope-brilliant work will be an international celebration of the songs of one of the greatest artists of our time,” said Jonathan Karp, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster. “The philosophy of modern song could only be written by Bob Dylan. His voice is unique and his work reflects his deep appreciation and understanding of songs, the people who bring those songs to life, and what songs mean to all of us.”

The Philosophy of Modern Song is the first new book since the first volume of The Dylan Chronicles, published in 2004. The release also comes just two years after Dylan unveiled his 39th studio album, Rough and Rowdy Ways.

“Philosophy of Modern Song” is released on November 8, 2022. See cover below.
