West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Bob Huggins appeared on 700 WLW’s Bill Cunningham Show Monday morning and directed a homophobic slur at Xavier University fans.
At about 1:15 of this clip, Huggins mentions “all these f**s, these Catholic f**s” and refers to fans of Xavier University who would “throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t.” have” don’t do it.”
Here is the clip warning that it contains homophobic language.
Huggins was asked by Cunningham if he “poached all the Xavier guys to play for West Virginia,” to which the coach replied, “Catholics don’t.” Huggins then spoke about Xavier fans in an exchange with the moderators of the Show about an incident at the Crosstown Shootout when the couple participated in that conversation.
Huggins: “Any school that can throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t, by God, they can get away with anything.”
Cunningham: “I think it was a transgender night, wasn’t it?”
Huggins: “It was a crosstown shootout, yeah, no, what it was was all these F-s, these Catholic F-s, I think.”
Cunningham: “All right.”
Huggins: “They were jealous they didn’t have one.”
The incident was first brought to our attention by Meteorologist Steve Norris.
Huggins was the head coach at the University of Cincinnati from 1995 to 2005 before moving to Kansas State and then West Virginia and being inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022. Cunningham has been a Cincinnati radio host since the early ’80s and also had his own nationally syndicated talk show on the CW in the early 2010s.
