Body covered in larvae, teenager dies after being abandoned in room by parents

A court in Wales is hearing a couple accused of killing their teenage daughter after leaving the young girl in ill health in a filthy, maggotcovered room.

Alun Titford, 45, and Sarah LloydJones, 39, allegedly neglected 16yearold Kaylea Titford and failed in their “duty of care” to get the young woman to exercise and eat healthy. This increased the teenage girl’s weight to 146 kg and made her morbidly obese.

The couple are still suspected of not keeping it clean and “medically safe”.

The jury heard the student who had spina bifida was “extremely independent” before the pandemic. She used a wheelchair to attend physical education classes.

However, as social isolation began, Kaylea was reportedly left to die in an extremely filthy room in her own Newton home on October 10, 2020.

Officials heard she was “living in conditions unsuitable for animals” and was forced to use “dog mats” to go to the bathroom on a urinesoaked floor.

The teenager’s nails had not been trimmed in six months and ‘adult’ worms were found all over her body. In addition, the jury was told that there were over a hundred flies on a piece of paper in Kaylea’s room and that there were traces of insect feces on the wheelchair.

Her hair was also matted and the teenager, who needed help with daily chores, hadn’t washed her for “several weeks”.

Prosecutor Caroline Rees KC said: “She lived and died in misery and humiliation”.

When police arrived at the home, one of the officers was “nearly sick” from the stench of unwashed feces in the young woman’s bathroom. The court was also told that a paramedic could smell “rotting meat.”

“After the body was removed the police could see the condition of the bed which was infested with worms and there was an unbearable smell of ammonia,” Caroline added.

Alun denies negligent homicide for gross negligence and causing or allowing the death of a child. Kaylea’s mother pleaded guilty to the same charges, the jury said.

The young woman’s father said he was “shocked” by his daughter’s death and said the teenager was her mother’s responsibility. The process goes on.
