“And I will always love you…” With these few words, it is impossible not to think of the Whitney Houston song of the same name and the soundtrack of the cult film Bodyguard, which TMC offers for review this Thursday, September 7, 2023, from 9:25 p.m. Released in 1992 and directed by Mick Jackson, this feature film tells – for those who missed it – the meeting between Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner), a former secret service agent turned bodyguard, and Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston), a world famous woman Actress and singer who was the victim of threats from an unknown fan.
A turning point in Whitney Houston’s career
The huge box office success and now cult film “Bodyguard” was Whitney Houston’s very first role as an actress. She will then star in the dramatic comedy Where Are the Men? film. (1996) and The Pastor’s Wife (1997) alongside Denzel Washington as she continued her career as a singer, performing her essential song “I will Always Love You” at each of her concerts. Without a doubt, this film marked a turning point in his career and yet! Originally, it wasn’t she who was supposed to play the lead role, but rather another big singing star.

Although it was released in the early ’90s, the film had already been in the works for… two decades! The project was created in the 70s and at that time it was Diana Ross and Steve McQueen who were supposed to play the main roles. Eventually Bodyguard was deemed too “controversial” and put aside before resurfacing a few years later, still with the performer of “I’m Coming Out” in the role of Rachel, this time accompanied by Ryan O’Neal. But the project is canceled again. The reason ? The two stars have a lot of differences and just broke up in the city! A few years later, “Bodyguard” was finally back on track, and while Olivia Newton-John, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Joan Jett were approached for the lead roles, Kevin Costner – also a producer on the film – had an idea: to entrust him with it to Whitney Houston. A decision he undoubtedly regretted a few times during filming, as he found it difficult to tolerate his partner’s “whims”. Little did they know that their on-screen couple would end up becoming iconic.
