A brief analysis from the second round confirmation. Bolsonarism has established itself as a political force and should continue to polarize with the PT. In other words, it occupied the place left by the PSDB as the great opponent of petismo.
The first results show that Bolsonaro won Senate seat, electing Tereza Cristina, Mourão, Magno Malta, Damares, the astronaut Marcos Pontes and even Sergio Moro, who pasted his image on the President at the end of the race. It’s progressed across the States and even in the Northeast.
The PSDB, meanwhile, is only a shadow of what it used to be: it will drop out in São Paulo and be beaten by former minister Onix Lorenzoni in Rio Grande do Sul. Since Rodrigo Garcia lost to Tarcísio de Freitas, a former minister in that government, it can be said that the great tormentor of the toucans is Jair Bolsonaro.
Now it remains to be seen whether Bolsonaro will be Lula’s executioner in the second round. The PT will have to work much harder to reinforce the muchvaunted broad front that did not guarantee Bolsonaro’s defeat.
As expected, Ciro Gomes leaves the election smaller than he entered. And Simone Tebet and her MDB will become an important asset for an eventual second round.
