Macron celebrated the win alongside his wife Brigitte, who was the subject of a joke by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on social media in 2019.

I regret that President Macron is trying to exploit an internal matter of Brazil and other Amazon countries for personal political gain. The sensationalist tone in which he refers to the Amazon (even citing fake photos) does nothing to solve the problem.

Days later, a supporter of the President posted a photo of Brigitte and First Lady Michelle and said Macron was stalking him out of envy. Bolsonaro replied: “Don’t humiliate the people. Hahahaha”. The comparison referred to the ages of the two wives and suggested that Bolsonaro would have an advantage because he was younger. In response, Macron called Bolsonaro “extremely disrespectful” and said he felt sorry for the Brazilians.

“We call on all Brazilians to be more and more aware of who this country, this miracle called Brazil, is. A unique country in the world that has everything it takes to thrive and we need each of you to help rebuild it. And freedom comes first. (…) Our Brazil, green and yellow,” he emphasized.
“France is a role model for us, let alone Mr. Macron. Macron is very well accompanied by Lula and Lula is very well accompanied by Macron, they understand each other, they speak the same language,” fired the President. “Macron has always slammed us on the Amazon issue as if he and his predecessors had saved something in France,” he added.
