Austria continues to maintain border controls with Slovenia and Hungary. As the Ministry of the Interior announced today, controls will initially continue for another six months. Austria also currently carries out border controls with the Czech Republic and Slovakia. At all other borders there are “intensive controls in the area close to the border”.
“Border controls are an important tool for police to consistently combat human trafficking and asylum abuse. In the current situation, controls are also an important measure to take action against terrorism”, said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). As long as the protection of external borders does not work and the Schengen system is broken, this measure will be necessary.
Meanwhile, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Slovenia and Germany have also extended previously introduced border controls. Austria has carried out border controls with Slovenia and Hungary since 2015.
