British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have been widely praised on social media for showing solidarity in the face of Russian aggression.

A video of Johnson shared by Ukraine’s Defense Ministry shows him and Zelenskyy defiantly walking the streets of Kyiv and talking to locals.

“This is what democracy looks like,” the Department of Defense tweeted. “This is what courage looks like. This is what true friendship between peoples and nations looks like.”

In another Twitter post, Johnson praised Ukrainians for having “the courage of a lion.”

“President (Zelenskyy) gave that lion’s roar,” Johnson tweeted. “Britain stands steadfastly with the people of Ukraine.”

Many Twitter users praised the scene, calling the leaders brave in the face of Russian aggression.

Shaun Biley, a Conservative MP, said the scene was a “true display of leadership”.

“We will continue to stand side by side with Ukraine as she fights for freedom and stands against tyranny and oppression,” he wrote.

Johnson paid a surprise visit to Kyiv over the weekend, where he pledged 120 armored vehicles and new anti-ship missile systems – part of another £130 premium military kit. He confirmed additional World Bank loans of US$500 million, bringing Britain’s total loan guarantee to US$1 billion.

Johnson said Ukraine has defied odds and driven Russian forces “at the gates of Kyiv, performing the greatest feat of arms of the 21st century.”

Britain and its partners “will increase economic pressure…not just freeze assets in banks and sanction oligarchs, but move away from using Russian hydrocarbons,” he said.

Johnson also described a vision for a future Ukraine so empowered and protected by the equipment, technology and know-how of Britain and its partners that it can never again be threatened in the same way. In the meantime, Johnson said, “there is a lot to be done to ensure that Ukraine succeeds, that Ukraine wins and that Putin must fail.”
