Born, no change at the top: the final decision about Stoltenberg

After so many rumours, the decision has been made: the mandate of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will be extended by another year. The news was published by the Times, which cites diplomatic sources saying the Norwegian is set to remain at the head of the coalition until the next summit of leaders in the summer of 2024.

The decision had been in the air since yesterday morning. “First of all, I think the new NATO Secretary General will be the good old NATO Secretary General. I think this is new and fresh and I like it, even though we have many strong candidates within NATO and Fredericksen is one of them,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said at a press conference at the headquarters of the NATO Estonian Mission to the EU in Brussels was responding to reporters asking whether the new secretary would be elected at the Vilnius summit and whether he was considering his name or that of Danish Prime Minister Fredericksen as a candidate. While Stoltenberg awaits the official announcement, Stoltenberg’s reconfirmation at the helm of the Atlantic Alliance is now a reality.
