Canadian filmmaker James Cameron can therefore boast of having made three of the story’s four box office hits. Launched to great fanfare in mid-December, its Avatar 2 continues to break new records. In the running for four awards at the next Academy Awards on March 12, Avatar: The Way of the Water is still going strong at the global box office, topping $7 million in US theaters by the end of the week, according to the box office recorded mojo.
It remains to be seen whether it will manage to overtake the two titles that rank ahead of it on the list of the most lucrative films in history, namely the first Avatar ($2.92 billion), released in 2009, and the production of Marvel Avengers in the long term: Endgame ($2.79 billion), which opened in 2019.
