Launched to great fanfare last Friday, Avatar: The Way of the Water dominated the Quebec box office, grossing $2,579,217 in just three days, according to Cinéac agency.

It’s the best start of the year in cinemas in the province behind Black Panther: Long Live Wakanda ($2.1 million) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($2.1 million).

Cinémas Guzzo President Vincent Guzzo, reached on Monday, said he was pleased with the release of the new film Avatar in its cinemas over the past weekend.

“It was very good,” he analyses.

“I’ve read in some media that the results are in at the North American box office [134 M$ en trois jours] were below the forecasts of the specialists, but one must not forget that the film lasts three hours. That’s an important factor because you can’t schedule as many screenings a day as, for example, with a two-hour film.

Therefore, according to Mr. Guzzo, the success of Avatar: the way of the water needs to be evaluated over time.

“I think it’s a film that will stay in theaters for a very long time. The first Avatar also hit theaters in December [2009] and it did very well not only during the holiday season but also in the first quarter of 2010. I expect the same phenomenon in Avatar 2.”

Avatar: The Way of the Water released worldwide last week and has already grossed more than $430 million at the global box office, marking one of its best starts since the pandemic began.

Also note that the romantic comedy “23. December” continues to do well at the Quebec box office. Written by India Desjardins, the Christmas film has amassed more than $1.3 million in box office receipts three weeks after its release.
